Sing World Music and Britten with QPS -  Sunday 3rd  October at 6.30pm (following the AGM, which will be at 5.30pm)

This workshop will be led by Mary Phillips and will focus on helping choir members to develop their vocal technique.  Mary will use brief passages from the music we'll be singing at the Christmas Concert - in particular from one or two pieces in Britten's A Ceremony of Carols.   We won't need any printed music since Mary will introduce us to the phrases orally.  So no experience of reading music will be required.  The accent will be on finding and applying energy - skills which will be useful for singing any music.  The workshop will last about an hour, and will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to catch up on everyone's news.

If you would like to take part please sign up here by 26th September.

A Ceremony of Carols - Sunday 12th  December at 6.30pm

Rehearsals for the concert will be held in the church on the following Sunday evenings, 6.30pm to 9.00pm:

31st  October

7th  November

14th  November

21st  November

28th  November

5th  December

and on the afternoon of Sunday 12 December - the rehearsal schedule for the day will be announced later.

The concert programme will include a variety of music for Christmas and the winter season, with a performance of Britten's A Ceremony of Carols as the centrepiece.  This will be sung by Queen's Park Junior Singers and QPS using both the three-part SSA and the four-part SATB versions.  The programme will also include songs from Britten's cycle A Charm of Lullabies, sung by Mary Phillips; an arrangement for SATB voices and harp by David Till of two lullabies by Renaissance composers - Upon my lap my Soveraigne sits by  Martin Peerson, and William Byrd's Lullaby my sweet little baby; Richard Pygott's Quid petis O fili - a remarkable piece, dating from  the early sixteenth century, which features a tender conversation between a baby and his mother; and carols and music for Christmas and the winter season from different countries, and from the Middle Ages to our own time - including a few for the audience to sing.

If you would like to take part please sign up here by 26th September.

AUTUMN RECITAL:  David Podd  (piano) on  Sunday 17th October at 6.30pm

This is the first in a series of occasional recitals presented by QPS.  David Podd will introduce and play pieces by Rachmaninov, Haydn and Janacek.  Watch this space for further information about the programme.

Christmas Carols around the Park – rehearsal on Sunday 19th December

On the afternoon of 19 December (time to be notified), we will rehearse carols for singing in the streets around the Park on two evenings in the following days.  A rehearsal will allow us to perform some carols we already do but could do a lot better with a little practice; and some others which we've never dared to do - or even thought of doing - because we know they would be impossible without rehearsal.  Watch this space for details of dates and times.

Tickets for future concerts can be reserved by emailing the Treasurer, Simon Judge. Prices are typically £10 for adults, £5 concessions, and £15 for a family ticket (defined as two adults plus a reasonable number of children).

We normally have four or five rehearsals before each concert. These are held on Sunday evenings – from 6.30 to 9.30 pm. We also have a rehearsal in the afternoon on the day of the concert – which is also at 6.30 on a Sunday evening.

There may also been some note-learning sessions for those who want / need them; although many find that Midi/MP3 files that we make available on this site are a very helpful alternative (though you can get some funny looks when you sing along to your iplayer on the tube …).

Warm-up and technical exercises from Mary Phillips. In each case go “right click” on the link and then “save target as” to download to your own PC. Then open using one of your usual media players (they are in MP3 format). These are very large files so download may take a little while. Don’t forget to delete them from your PC when you have finished with them.
